WRTI Presents Operas Suppressed by the Third Reich on August 9

Although Viktor Ullmann died in Auschwitz, his opera lives on.

The Los Angeles Opera's Music Director James Conlon is reviving operas banned by the Nazi regime via Recovered Voices: A Lost Generation's Long-Forgotten Masterpieces.

Tune to WRTI on Saturday, August 9 from 1:30 to 5 pm to hear two one-act operas: The Broken Jug, by Viktor Ullmann (at right), and The Dwarf, by Alexander Zemlinksy.

"We must now mitigate a great injustice by working to revive the music of those whose only 'fault' was that they were Jewish, or that they were opposed to or deemed offensive by an authoritarian regime."

Remembering Herbert von Karajan on Two Sundays in July

Join us for a two-part biographical portrait of the legendary Maestro on Sunday, July 20 and 27, from 3 to 5 pm.

Broadcast in recognition of the centenary of Karajan's birth, the program features recorded memories from international singers, instrumentalists, and orchestra players who performed with Karajan, and others in the music industry who knew and worked with him.

Have an "enchanted" morning with music by the Great American Songwriter Richard Rodgers on the 106th anniversary of his birth.

With nearly 1,000 songs and over 40 musicals to his credit, Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) left an indelible mark on American music and popular culture. To honor Rodgers' legacy, WRTI will play selections from some of his most popular musicals, including South Pacific, Oklahoma!, and The King and I, as well as excerpts from the Emmy-winning television documentary series Victory at Sea.

Celebrate the Legacy of Igor Stravinsky on his Birthday: Tuesday, June 17

One of the leading composers of the 20th century, Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was a musical chameleon, employing myriad musical styles and innovations throughout his career ranging from atonal serialism to neoclassicism. The Russian-born cosmopolitan spent much of his life in France and Switzerland before settling in America where he became a naturalized citizen and lived until his death in 1971.

Join Discoveries Host Kile Smith from 5 to 6 pm for a program showcasing music by Latin American composers, many of whose works were acquired by Fleisher during the WPA years of 1935 to 1943. Guest will be Gary Galv?n, a classical guitarist, musicologist, and an expert in the history of the WPA music projects.
