Join Maureen Malloy for the broadcast of one of the concert events of the season! It's a celebration of a true Philadelphia "son of jazz," - trumpeter Lee Morgan. And what makes this concert so special? Another Philadelphia "son of jazz" heads up the tribute - trumpeter Terell Stafford.
David Patrick Stearns profiles soprano Angela Meade while she was a student at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. Meade is now a fast-rising star in the opera world. She sings Elvira in the Met Opera's ERNANI - on WRTI on Saturday, February 25 at 1 pm.
Joseph Calleja sings in the best opera houses and enjoys the career of an opera star - although he doesn't think of himself that way. Maybe that's why he's hosting this record release party and concert for his new album, The Maltese Tenor, at one of Greenwich Village's hippest music clubs, (Le) Poisson Rouge. He's invited a few friends, too - violinist Daniel Hope and fellow opera singers Luca Pisaroni and Katie Van Kooten, as well as an orchestra and conductor.--From NPR Music
Perhaps classical violinist Hilary Hahn could have a second career in design; she has a keen sense for combining opposites and making them shine together. She intersperses Paganini and Bach into her concerts with singer-songwriter Josh Ritter, while on CD, she pairs Schoenberg with Sibelius and Tchaikovsky with a 21st-century work. For this solo Tiny Desk Concert, Hahn does it again - J.S. Bach and Charles Ives, side by side.--from NPR
