WRTI to Broadcast Oscar Brown, Jr., Tribute on October 8

Join Maureen Malloy on Wednesday, October 8 at 9:30 pm as she hosts a musical tribute to the late-great Oscar Brown Jr. The artist, lyricist, and civil rights activist would have turned 82 on October 10th.

Maureen takes you through the life and music of the man responsible for hits such as "Signifying Monkey" and "The Snake." Oscar Brown, Jr. also created lyrics for tunes such as "Work Song," "Afro Blue" and "All Blues." Join us for a musical journey as we celebrate the life of this wonderful musical spirit.

Vote In Our Online Poll for The AVA Competition's Star Singer

Let your voice be heard! Choose your favorite operatic singer from the Academy of Vocal Arts' popular Giargiari Bel Canto operatic competition when it airs on WRTI on Sunday, October 5, from 3 to 5 pm.

The actual competition will take place at the Kimmel Center on Oct. 2. The event is sold out, but you can still hear it and participate in selecting the WRTI listener favorite on Oct. 5.

WRTI Presents Operas Suppressed by the Third Reich on August 9

Although Viktor Ullmann died in Auschwitz, his opera lives on.

The Los Angeles Opera's Music Director James Conlon is reviving operas banned by the Nazi regime via Recovered Voices: A Lost Generation's Long-Forgotten Masterpieces.

Tune to WRTI on Saturday, August 9 from 1:30 to 5 pm to hear two one-act operas: The Broken Jug, by Viktor Ullmann (at right), and The Dwarf, by Alexander Zemlinksy.

"We must now mitigate a great injustice by working to revive the music of those whose only 'fault' was that they were Jewish, or that they were opposed to or deemed offensive by an authoritarian regime."
