WRTI Honored with Two Broadcasting Awards!

WRTI Station Manager Bill Johnson and WRTI Senior Arts and Culture Producer Susan Lewis accept two awards from PAB board member Jeffrey Androulonis.

The Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters presented WRTI with two awards on May 5th at their annual luncheon. Senior Arts and Culture Producer Susan Lewis, and Station Manager Bill Johnson, accepted the awards on behalf of the station at the Hershey Hotel.

Schumann, Mork, Sawallisch and The Philadelphia Orchestra on WRTI, Feb 16 at 1 PM

Cellist Truls Mork

This Sunday at 1 pm, it's a Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert archival broadcast celebrating the legacy of the Orchestra’s late conductor laureate, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and featuring Norwegian cellist Truls Mork.

In this concert, recorded in 2002 at Verizon Hall, Mork will play the Schumann Cello Concerto in A minor. Also on the program, the Manfred Overture, and the Symphony No. 4 – all Schumann, and conducted by Maestro Sawallisch in memorable performances just a few years before his last appearance with the Philadelphians.

Listen to WRTI 90.1 FM at 1 pm on Sunday for a special archival Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast from February 19, 2005. On the podium is the Orchestra’s former Music Director Wolfgang Sawallisch, just 2 weeks before his last appearance with the Philadelphians.

On the program that day were Hindemith’s Concert Music for Strings and Brass, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D, played brilliantly by the Orchestra's Concertmaster David Kim, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 - all works that were special to the late Maestro.

The program includes Hindemith’s Concert Music for Strings and Brass, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1  in C Major.  As WRTI’s Susan Lewis reports, the Orchestra’s beloved former music director forged strong bonds with the musicians he led.

The program includes Hindemith’s Concert Music for Strings and Brass, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1  in C Major.

As WRTI’s Susan Lewis reports, the ensemble’s late music director shared his musical gifts with audiences at home and abroad, leading the orchestra on eight international tours.

This was the first live Philadelphia Orchestra broadcast in 13 years, and a memorable event it was, featuring a performance by violinist Gil Shaham of the Brahms Violin Concerto. Yannick Nézet-Séguin is on the podium.
