Sun Ra

Celebrating the influence of the Philadelphia visionary musician, philosopher, composer, and band leader Sun Ra, Philadelphia Jazz Project presents Satellites Are Spinning: A Sizzling, Sonic Celebration of Sun Ra.

Today marks 100 years since Sun Ra was born — or, as the musician might have put it, since he arrived on Earth. An influential jazz composer, keyboardist and bandleader, Sun Ra always insisted he was just visiting this planet.

WRTI's J. Michael Harrison recently moderated a very special panel that explored music known as "The New Thing" - from the free jazz movement of the 1950s and 1960s, led by innovators such as Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, and Sun Ra.
