June 4, 2018. It’s been quite a few years since a noteworthy jazz release included narration and movements to tell a historical story. The last one I can remember was Irvin Mayfield’s 2004 album Strange Fruit. Now, pianist and composer, and Temple University professor, Elio Villafranca has stepped up to the plate and released Cinque—the culmination of years of composing and traveling.

All Memorial Day Weekend: Double Takes on WRTI!

May 24, 2017

Wait, what... it’s summer already?! We’re doing a “Double Take Memorial Day Weekend” at WRTI with the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day Weekend. Hear “double takes” of your favorite classical composers and jazz standards. And of course, we’ll play classical and jazz favorites all weekend long as we honor the meaning of Memorial Day.

To kick off our Jazz Appreciation Month festivities here at WRTI, our hosts presented their favorite new jazz releases of 2015 from March 30 - April 4. Our on-site experts have tastes that span the spectrum of jazz, and they have taken the time to explain how these selections caught their attention, and made it into their personal collections.

Below, listen to WRTI jazz hosts discuss the new releases from 2015 they appreciate most.
