A summer jazz series is once again showcasing music in a historic Philadelphia neighborhood. As WRTI’s Susan Lewis reports, it’s the second season for the concerts, presented by Sol Unlimited Jazz and Arts.
Jazz great Billie Holiday, who died at age 44 in 1959, would have turned 99 on April 7, 2014. As WRTI’s Susan Lewis reports, in her short career, this Philadelphia-born singer made a huge impact on jazz and American song.
Music lives in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, at a site rich with American history. WRTI’s Susan Lewis explores Sol Unlimited Jazz and Arts at Cliveden. The summer music series kicks off this month on June 19th, or "Juneteenth," a holiday celebrating African American freedom from slavery. Each program features a variety of jazz styles, says producer Serena Sol Brown, including standards as well as original pieces.
