We can almost see the music on Now Is the Time, Saturday, May 2nd at 9 pm. Robert Moran took snippets of words from a 30-year correspondence with John Cage and worked them into this delicious three-part work for chorus, Seven Sounds Unseen.
Nicolas Scherzinger spins musical motifs within a chamber ensemble and imagines what they would sound like if held up to Fractured Mirrors. The particular sand of the Gobi Desert, they say, sings when the wind blows a certain way. Bright Sheng conducts two ensembles in The Singing Gobi Desert, Music from China and the Prism Saxophone Quartet, with whom he imagines hearing the sand and viewing a mirage—the archetype of seeing and not-seeing.

A tribute to a family, carved in cemetery marble, is the choral Notturno in Weiss (Nocturne in White) by Robert Moran. Joseph Hallman's Three Poems of Jessica Hornik uses voice with an expanded chamber ensemble, while Anthony Iannaccone selects a solo piano for his Song without Words.
An Uruguayan legend or Leyenda comes from Sergio Cervetti for voice and orchestra, and from her ten-year-old daughter's poem about a Cape Cod berry-picking excursion, Elena Ruehr creates the all-instrumental Blackberries.
There are journeys and rumors of journeys on Now Is the Time, Sunday, October 13th at 10 pm. Harold Meltzer's Rumors is for one flutist and four flutes: piccolo, C flute, alto, and bass. He envisions a drum set, the breathing of conspiracies (con spirare, to breathe together), and an old man on a bench in Italy trying to remember a children's song.
Sergio Cervetti pictures Peru's desert drawings in Nazca for string orchestra. Seen from the air, they could be monkeys, spiders, hummingbirds, or extraterrestrials, but whatever they are, the music is rich and inviting. As is Elegant Journey with Stopping Points of Interest, using the drawn, or graphic, notation that Robert Moran was employing in the ’60s. He revised this for solo organ, and we hear the European premiere from 2009.
The Mendelssohn Club Chorus, the Philadelphia Boys Choir, and The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia are set to perform at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in a very special concert that includes the world premiere of Robert Moran’s expanded - and haunting - 9/11 tribute, Trinity Requiem.

Trinity Wall Street commissioned Robert Moran’s Trinity Requiem for the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 destruction of New York’s World Trade Center. Moran has written music for entire cities to perform—San Francisco, Graz, Bethlehem, Pa.—with cars, airplanes, multiple orchestras, choirs, and bands joining in raucous mélanges of celebration. You wonder what he would write for a city’s terror.
