Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia

The tremendous trumpeter Terell Stafford says finding talent for the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia was “super easy” because Philadelphia is filled with brilliant musicians. Chemistry is key in the band that Stafford put together in 2013. He says the jazz orchestra is what Philadelphia is about:  jazz virtuosos with ties to the city, focusing on music connected to its past and present.


Q & A with Trumpeter Terell Stafford

WRTI's Maureen Malloy recently had a chance to sit down with trumpeter Terell Stafford at the WRTI studios.    Stafford is the Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies at Temple University, founder and band leader of the Terell Stafford Quintet, and Managing and Artistic Director of the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia (JOP). He's also a thoughtful, articulate, and humble spokesperson for jazz performance and education.

How did you manage to get Benny Golson to agree to perform with the Orchestra?

The red-hot 2014 Longwood Gardens Wine & Jazz Festival is on Saturday, June 7th, from 2 to 9 pm, and is expanding to a garden-wide experience with live jazz performances on multiple stages throughout Longwood Gardens. Jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is headliner to an outstanding lineup, including Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet, Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia, Tony Miceli Quartet, and Tom Moon's Jazz Casual.
