Join us on Sunday afternoons to hear our very own "Fabulous Philadelphians" in live, recorded concerts from Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center.

The Philadelphia Orchestra has a long and venerable history of radio broadcasts, as the first orchestra with its own commercially sponsored national radio series, beginning in 1929 on NBC. This new, weekly series of radio broadcasts marks the return of the Orchestra to the airwaves. WRTI's Gregg Whiteside is producer and host.

The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert on WRTI: Helene Grimaud Plays Brahms, Jan. 26 at 1 PM

This past December, Michael Tilson Thomas, substituting on short notice for an ailing Yannick Nezet-Seguin, joined pianist  Hélène Grimaud for a Philadelphia Orchestra concert that featured the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1, and the Symphonie fantastique of Hector Berlioz. The concert had been performed only days earlier at Carnegie Hall in New York, and the reviews were sensational.

This Sunday on the Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert on WRTI, Helene Grimaud performs the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1, with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas subbing for Yannick Nezet-Seguin.

As WRTI’s Jim Cotter reports, the French pianist was originally scheduled to play the second Brahms piano concerto, but changed her program when she heard that Yannick would not be on the podium for the concert.

Listen to WRTI 90.1 FM at 1 pm on Sunday for a special archival Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast from February 19, 2005. On the podium is the Orchestra’s former Music Director Wolfgang Sawallisch, just 2 weeks before his last appearance with the Philadelphians.

On the program that day were Hindemith’s Concert Music for Strings and Brass, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D, played brilliantly by the Orchestra's Concertmaster David Kim, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 - all works that were special to the late Maestro.

Itzhak Perlman Conducts and Performs With The Philadelphia Orchestra on WRTI: January 12 at 1 PM

Classical music icon Itzhak Perlman is conductor and violin soloist in this live recorded concert from late November, 2013 at the Kimmel Center. Listen as Mr. Perlman leads the Philadelphia Orchestra and plays Beethoven’s Romance No. 1 and 2 for violin and orchestra.

Also on the program is the exquisite Philadelphia Orchestra string section playing Dvorak’s lyrical and sparkling Serenade for Strings, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, and the Brahms Academic Festival Overture.
