It's Johann Strauss Jr.'s beloved operatic confection, with a revised libretto by acclaimed playwright Douglas Carter Beane. Set in turn-of-the-century Vienna, this production of DIE FLEDERMAUS (The Bat) features Susanna Phillips and Christopher Maltman leading the sparkling cast, which also includes Jane Archibald, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Michael Fabiano, and Paulo Szot. Baritone Ambrogio Maestri sings the title role in Giuseppe Verdi's FALSTAFF.

An undisputed master of Verdi's final comic masterpiece, James Levine conducts the first new Met Falstaff since 1964. Ambrogio Maestri sings the role of the blustery Sir John Falstaff, opposite a marvelous ensemble cast, in a production set in the mid-20th century. Join us on Saturday, December 14, 1 to 4 pm.

The Met Opera on WRTI: Season Premier Broadcast, Dec. 7, 1 PM

The 2013/14 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season begins on WRTI with a live broadcast of Verdi’s tragic masterpiece Rigoletto, set in Las Vegas and starring baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky in his first company performance of the title role. Tenor Matthew Polenzani co-stars as the Duke, and two artists make their network broadcast debuts: Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva, who sings Gilda, and Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado. Bass Štefan Kocán and mezzo-soprano Oksana Volkova are the corrupt siblings Sparafucile and Maddalena.

After Ailing, A Favorite Conductor Stages His Comeback

An extended ovation greeted conductor James Levine last May when he returned to performing after a two-year absence. In 2011, he resigned as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and cancelled his performances at the Metropolitan Opera. He'd been plagued by health problems, injuries and operations, and it was painful for him to move. Many of his admirers, even he himself, feared he might never conduct again.

WRTI Opera Day Contest Winner!

Did you enter our "Opera Lover's Dream Contest" on WRTI's spectacular Opera Day on November 16th? It was a great day, filled with 12 hours of really wonderful opera programming. The prize package for the contest included subscriptions to select Academy of Vocal Arts and Opera Philadelphia upcoming productions, and lots of must-have opera CDs.

And the contest winner is...Muriel Gordon from Wycombe, PA. Muriel has been a WRTI member since 2009. Congratulations! Brava!

Verdi's IL TROVATORE: Houston Grand Opera on WRTI, Nov. 23, 1 PM

Set in 15th-century northern Spain, Il trovatore tells the story of Manrico, a gypsy troubadour who has fallen in love with the Duchess of Aragon. However, the Count di Luna is also attracted to Aragon, and when he attempts to take her from Manrico, the troubadour takes the count’s life in a duel, not realizing they were brothers, and that his mother Azucena actually stole him from a family of royals many years ago.
