Jazz with Maureen Malloy

Monday through Thursday, 9 pm to midnight

Maureen Malloy takes the reigns after BP "high-tails it," with an eclectic mix of different genres of jazz. Be it Modern, Post-Modern, Latin, Bop, Hard-Bop, Big Band or the singers (old and new), you'll always find something you like, and learn why you like it.  Musical guests also frequent the studio, so you can gain insight into how the jazz world turns, and who is creating new events and music.  Also featured are live tracks that give you a different outlook on familiar pieces of music, and make you feel like you were part of the artists' musical journey.

On Philadelphia pianist Orrin Evans' trio version of Ornette Coleman's "Blues Connotation," drummer Donald Edwards and bassist Eric Revis set a New Orleans second-line groove tinged with vintage hip-hop. A beat like that is catnip to Evans, who gets right down and rolls in it.

So it's easy to look at bandleader/trumpeter Etienne Charles’ new album, Creole Soul, and assume it's full of traditional jazz or New Orleans-style trumpet.  This is not the case, as Charles’ background (and playing) is actually the true epitome of Creole.

It's been too long since we simply sat up and pointed out a few of the many new releases worth a set of ears. Luckily, the staff on weekends at All Things Considered thought the same. They invited me to sit down with host Jacki Lyden and play a few cuts for them.

Here's music from an elder statesman of piano, a trumpeter who understands creole music personally, a drummer who writes tunes with a payoff, and a singer in her early 20s with maturity and kick.
