Jazz with Bob Perkins

Monday through Thursday, 6 to 9 pm; Sunday 9 am to 1 pm

Lovingly known as “BP with the GM” (Bob Perkins with the Good Music), BP brings you that good music just in time for dinner during your work week, and keeps your Sunday brunch swinging. His selections are like a familiar hug from Jazz Land featuring your favorite standards and vocalists such as Sarah, Ella, and Nat, some Big Band legends including the Duke and the Count, and the giants of the instrumentals like Lee Morgan, Hank Crawford, Miles, and Coltrane. Take a listen to "Ol' BP" as he calls himself...you'll be back again and again.

ICON Suggests: Eliane Elias, I Thought About You (A Tribute To Chet Baker)

Eliane Elias

A one-of-a-kind pianist and performer, you never know what Eliane Elias will do next. The Brazilian native is an indefatigable interpreter of song, effortlessly shifting between styles and moods. In concert, she has a story behind every tune and infuses her playing with a party-like groove, yet she remains a consummate musician with a deep, soulful vibe that she always brings to the material.

The Artistic Evolution of The Legendary Tony Bennett

Tony Bennett has been at this for a while. But he is still as enthusiastic—or maybe even more enthusiastic—about jazz, jazz musicians and singing than when I first met him in 1970. I was but a wee lad back then, playing drums in Philadelphia with sax great Charlie Ventura. One evening, the great jazz pianist—John Bunch—newly-appointed Musical Director for Tony Bennett and former Ventura cohort in the Gene Krupa jazz quartet, walked in after his Bennett gig and wanted to sit in. I’ll never forget it.

'My Ellington': A Pianist Gives Duke Her Personal Touch

Duke Ellington (1899-1974) at the piano at the Fairfield Hall, Croydon, during a British tour on Feb. 10, 1963.

At the keys, Duke Ellington abstracted from stride piano, which modernized ragtime. Ellington's own spare percussive style then refracted through Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor, as well as a generation of freewheeling pianists active in Europe, like Aki Takase. Her new solo piano album is My Ellington, on which she plays some stride bass herself, as in "In a Mellow Tone."

The New York Philharmonic: A Jazz Flavor, June 23 At 4 PM

Wynton Marsalis

All of the works in this Sunday's New York Philharmonic broadcast have a jazz connection. Igor Stravinsky's 1918 Ragtime for 11 Instruments draws its inspiration from popular music of the time, including jazz. Aaron Copland's jazz-steeped Clarinet Concerto dates from 30 years later, a commission from Benny Goodman. Wynton Marsalis has describe his "Swing Symphony" as a symphonic meditation on the evolution of swing, and prominently features the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, with the Philharmonic.  Alan Gilbert and Case Scaglione
 conduct.

Orlando Haddad and Patricia King will fill you in about their current project to complete a fabulous CD that they started work on in 2004 when they had teamed up with arranger and orchestrator, Bill Zaccagni to present “Symphony in Bossa,” a music program enhanced by Bill’s arrangements written specifically for MINAS - featuring original compositions and traditional Brazilian repertoire. "Symphony in Bossa" was halted due to Bill's sudden, tragic passing.
