Organ and Brass: Sept. 9th at 3 pm on Encore!

Organist Jeffrey Brillhart rehearses with Canadian Brass.

Renowned organist Jeffrey Brillhart plays the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ, in a program of Bach, Brahms, Vierne, Gabrielli, Scheidt, and Faure.  He'll be joined by the acclaimed Canadian Brass for an afternoon of musical fireworks! Chamber Music from Wolf Trap: Sept. 9th, 4 pm on Encore!

WRTI takes you to one of the world's most-respected chamber music festivals at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia.  It's music by Handel, Corelli, William Boyce, and Mozart's Quartet in B-flat, K. 458 "The Hunt," featuring the American String Quartet. Join us on Sunday, September 9th, 4 to 5 pm.

Over the course of the 20th century, our classical singers were enthusiastic advocates for songs by American composers. In this installment of Thomas Hampson's Song of America series you'll hear the music they brought to far-flung audiences through recitals, phonograph records, and radio broadcasts. The NY Philharmonic: The Artistry of Magnus Lindberg, Sept. 2 on Encore!

Composer Magnus Lindberg

Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg is the Philharmonic's composer-in-residence, at the invitation of Music Director Alan Gilbert.  Lindberg's music opened the 2009-10 season of the Philharmonic, Gilbert's first concert as music director.  This Sunday, it's an all-Lindberg program, with the opening work, Expo, as the first item on the program.  We'll also hear the world-premiere performance of his Piano Concerto No. 2, with Pianist Yefim Bronfman as soloist. Sunday, September 2nd, 3 to 5 pm.

NY Philharmonic at the Vail Valley Music Festival: August 26, 3 pm on Encore!

Pianist Yefim Bronfman

Music Director Alan Gilbert conducts the NY Philharmonic in concert performances of two works from their summer home in Colorado: the Sinfonia Espansiva, Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 3 for large orchestra with a wordless soprano and baritone obbligato, and the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the cornerstones of the repertoire.  Yefim Bronfman joins the orchestra for the Brahms. Sunday, August 26th  3 to 5 pm.

Ives the Chronicler: Song of America on ENCORE! August 26, 5 pm

American composer Charles Ives was unprecedented at suiting his musical style to the story he wanted to tell; he created dozens of surprising “snapshots in song” of what it was like to be alive in America during his lifetime.

Baritone Thomas Hampson hosts this compelling series of programs covering the history of music in America, and its impact on society. Sunday, August 26, 5 to 6 pm.

The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia: August 19th, 5 pm on ENCORE!

Catch this month's broadcast of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Music Director Dirk Brossé leads a program that includes The Rococo Variations for cello and orchestra by Tchaikovsky, the Vaughan Williams Oboe Concerto, and Barber's beloved Adagio for Strings.  Hai-Ye Ni is cello soloist in the program, and Geoffrey Deemer is oboe soloist. Sunday, August 19th from 5 to 6 pm.

New York Philharmonic in Colorado: August 19th, 3 pm on Encore!

Pianist Benjamin Grosvenor

Join us as the New York Philharmonic takes us away to Vail, Colorado for a performance from the Philharmonic's summer home - the Vail Valley Music Festival.  Andrey Boreyko is on the podium, with pianist Benjamin Grosvenor for a program that includes the Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 2, and the heroic Symphony No. 1 of Johannes Brahms. Sunday, August 19th, 3 to 5 pm.

Kimmel Center Presents Works for Organ and Piano: August 12, 3 pm on ENCORE!

Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts

This week, it's a two-part program featuring performances from this past season at the Kimmel Center. In part one, organist Jeremy Filsell is at the console of the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ, in a recital recorded last January. Mr. Filsell is an award-winning organ scholar, and one of the few virtuoso performers on organ and piano.  His program includes works by Rachmaninoff, Bossi, and Dupre.

War Cries on Song of America: August 12th at 5 pm on ENCORE!

Baritone Thomas Hampson hosts this compelling series of programs covering the history of music in America, and its impact on society. Throughout our history, America has gone to war with bravado and with anguish.  Songs have helped shape those emotions, and express them - inspiring us to battle, sustaining our courage, giving us a way to lament our losses.  Hear this week's program on Sunday, August 12, 5 to 6 pm.  Songs include: "Dixie," "Over There," and "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
