The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra With An All-French Program: Sept. 23 at 3 pm on Encore!

Members of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra

It's Philadelphia's talented youth in a virtuoso program for orchestra this Sunday. Ravel's Rapsodie Espagnole, Debussy's La Mer, and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique make up the program conducted by Music Director Louis Scaglione. 

The concert was recorded in performance this past June, in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center, and marked the end of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra's 72nd Season.  Sunday, September 23, 3 to 5 pm.

Arthur Farwell, American Pioneer: Song of America, Sept. 23rd at 5 pm on Encore!

American composer Arthur Farwell may not be a familiar name to many, but he was an important influence on American Music at the turn of the 20th century.  Farwell took up Antonin Dvorak's challenge to Americans to find their own musical voices, and used music of Native Americans and words of American poets as inspiration for his own unique voice. He also pioneered the publishing of American composers and poets through his famed Wa-Wan Press.  Sunday, September 23rd from 5 to 6 pm. Baritone Thomas Hampson is your host.

Lancaster Symphony Joins WRTI's Concert Line-Up: Sept. 16th at 3 pm on Encore!

Join WRTI in welcoming the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra to Encore! In this first broadcast it's a mostly French program, with a little Gershwin for good measure.  We'll hear Music Director Stephen Gunzenhauser conduct Roussel's Bacchus et Ariadne Ballet Suite, the Suite No. 2 from Maurice Ravel's masterful Daphnis et Chloe, and George Gershwin's An American in ParisThis Sunday, September 16th, 3 to 5 pm.

It's an afternoon of Haydn, Faure, and Bach on our monthly Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia broadcast. Dirk Brosse conducts the familiar Pavane of Gabriel Faure. Then, two works led by Conductor Laureate Ignat Solzhenitsyn - the Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, and the Symphony No. 99 of Joseph Haydn.

Organist Jeffrey Brillhart rehearses with Canadian Brass.

Renowned organist Jeffrey Brillhart plays the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ, in a program of Bach, Brahms, Vierne, Gabrielli, Scheidt, and Faure.  He'll be joined by the acclaimed Canadian Brass for an afternoon of musical fireworks! The NY Philharmonic: The Artistry of Magnus Lindberg, Sept. 2 on Encore!

Composer Magnus Lindberg

Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg is the Philharmonic's composer-in-residence, at the invitation of Music Director Alan Gilbert.  Lindberg's music opened the 2009-10 season of the Philharmonic, Gilbert's first concert as music director.  This Sunday, it's an all-Lindberg program, with the opening work, Expo, as the first item on the program.  We'll also hear the world-premiere performance of his Piano Concerto No. 2, with Pianist Yefim Bronfman as soloist. Sunday, September 2nd, 3 to 5 pm.

NY Philharmonic at the Vail Valley Music Festival: August 26, 3 pm on Encore!

Pianist Yefim Bronfman

Music Director Alan Gilbert conducts the NY Philharmonic in concert performances of two works from their summer home in Colorado: the Sinfonia Espansiva, Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 3 for large orchestra with a wordless soprano and baritone obbligato, and the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the cornerstones of the repertoire.  Yefim Bronfman joins the orchestra for the Brahms. Sunday, August 26th  3 to 5 pm.
