Clarinetist Alexander Bedenko: From Ukraine to Curtis and Now The World

Jill Pasternak interviews Alexander Bedenko

Here's the impressive story of a young Russian clarinetist who moved all the way to Philadelphia at age 17 for musical training and is now a rising star - one of the most prominent talents of his generation.

Born in 1982 in Kharkov, Ukraine, Alexander studied at The Curtis Institute of Music with Donald Montanaro, graduating in 2005. His accomplishments range from taking top honors at major international competitions to holding principal positions with leading orchestras under world-renowned conductors. He's been in demand as both soloist and ensemble player - attracting the attention of major conductors, as well as leading orchestras, ensembles, and festivals in the United States, Europe and Asia.

The Barber Strikes Again

The Academy of Vocal Arts scores once more with their production of Giocchino Rossini's time-honored opera buffa, The Barber of Seville. Three impressive casts have alternated through six performances in Philadelphia, Haverford and Warrington.   The opera will be broadcast on WRTI at 1 pm on Saturday, November 10th.  Prior to the broadcast, Jill Pasternak will feature three of the principals on Crossover at 11:30 am. They are Steven La Brie (Figaro), Sydney Mancasola (Rosina) and Diego Silva (Count Almaviva).  The production is conducted by maestro Richard Raub.

Lang Lang: Beyond Chopin

Lang Lang delivers in his newest release: The Chopin Album, on the Sony Classical label. When I met him several years ago he was being hailed as a great find, but he was also stretching out to young people as an ambassador for UNICEF.  A big heart and a big talent, neither of which has diminished, spurs Lang Lang on to perform a special one-night concert on Tuesday October 30th at 6:30 p.m. at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium.

Bucks County Choral Society: Bringing A Rachmaninoff Masterpiece To Life

In celebration of the Bucks County Choral Society's 40th anniversary, distinguished Artistic Director Thomas Lloyd will lead the ensemble in Rachmaninoff's stunning All-Night Vigil - a symphony for a cappella voices, considered a crowning achievement of Russian Orthodox choral literature - on October 28th. Contrary to what the title might lead one to believe, this choral masterpiece is only about an hour in length.

Canadian Brass and Organist Jeffrey Brillhart: A Special Treat!

The four musicians in the Canadian Brass, who perform works in the classical repertoire with daring leaps into jazz and popular standards, were joined by renowned organist Jeffrey Brillhart last March in Verizon Hall. On the heels of their latest album release, Canadian Brass Takes Flight (January 31, 2012), this special organ and brass program included works from their recent album, along with new arrangements and collaborations with the impressive talents of Brillhart, the director of music and fine arts at the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church.
