Marilyn Maye: jazz singer

Jill Pasternak talks to the legendary jazz cabaret singer during an encore broadcast originally aired in June. Maye's career has been multi-faceted, including 76 appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, singing alongside jazz icon Ella Fitzgerald, and performing at jazz clubs in NYC from the Copacabana to Birdland.

Discovered by Steve Allen in a Kansas City nightclub almost five decades ago, she went on to sing for Princess Grace in Monaco, with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, and at Lincoln Center.

Jill Pasternak speaks with the world-famous violinist about his recording of The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, an orchestral adaptation of a popular Chinese legend.

Written in 1959 by composers Chen Gang and He Zhanhao while they were students at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto premiered in the same year featuring renowned violinist Yu Lina. Although instantly popular, the concerto was banned by the Communist regime during the Cultural Revolution and the composers were jailed.

This week Jill Pasternak's guest is pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. He recently performed on the Oscar-nominated score for the film Atonement by composer Dario Marianelli. He's also released an album featuring Camille Saint-Saens' Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 5 with L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romand, conducted by Charles Dutoit.
