The Philadelphians and Yannick in Asia: Not Your Typical Tour

Beijing's National Centre for the Performing Arts is on the itinerary for The Philadelphia Orchestra's 2014 Asia Tour, as well as some very unusual venues.

The Philadelphia Orchestra is going deeper into China than ever before, into the Hunan province where modern arts centers have only existed for a few years, and out of Macao's air-conditioned casinos for outdoor performing amid the ruins of a cathedral. The Philadelphia Inquirer's David Patrick Stearns will be there every step of the way.

The Philadelphians in Concert on WRTI: Blomstedt Conducts Brahms and Mozart, May 11, 1 PM

Swedish conductor Herbert Blomstedt

Johannes Brahms finally overcame his writer’s block when it came to writing a symphony at the age of 43. The shadow of Beethoven loomed so ominously that the composer took decades to complete his Symphony No.1. This triumphal work has rightfully found its place among the masterpieces of the 19th-century repertoire.

Celebrating C.P.E. Bach: The Sentimental Rebel

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (March 8, 1714 – December 14, 1788)

J.S. Bach’s second-surviving son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), was a musical force in his own right. His fame, at least after the mid-1700s, overshadowed that of his now-legendary father. This year, six German cities with ties to C.P.E.’s musical footprint in Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt (Oder), Leipzig, Potsdam, and Weimar are leading a celebration of the 300th anniversary of his birth.
