Lyric Opera of Chicago on WRTI: Puccini's MADAMA BUTTERFLY, May 24, 1 PM

Soprano Patricia Racette sings Cio Cio San and tenor Stefano Secco sings Pinkerton in Puccini's MADAMA BUTTERFLY.

Family, fortune, and honor—the geisha Cio-Cio-San forsakes them all for the callous American naval officer who calls her his "bride." But what she sees as a lifetime commitment, he treats as just a fleeting pleasure.

Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly features some of opera's most famous music, including Cio-Cio-San's heartbreaking "Un bel di" and the beautiful "Humming Chorus." It's Puccini's heartbreaking tragedy on WRTI. Saturday, May 24, 1 to 4 pm.

The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast this Sunday at 1 pm opens with a collection of “Symphonic Fragments” from Alfredo Casella’s rarely performed opera La Donna Serpente (The Snake-Woman), based on an 18th-century fable-play by Carlo Gozzi, and is followed by one of Sergei Prok

A Freelance Classical Musician's Tell-All Memoir Becomes Amazon Series

Gael García Bernal plays the role of Rodrigo in the new Amazon Studios series, MOZART IN THE JUNGLE.

The way we watch television has altered radically in the past 10 years. So, too, has the classical music world. Yet now, as WRTI's Jim Cotter reports, a musician's memoir written a decade ago is being adapted for television...but not for any traditional TV station.

Lyric Opera of Chicago on WRTI: Verdi's OTELLO, May 17, 1 PM

Ana María Martínez sings Desdemona and Johan Botha sings the title role in Verdi's OTELLO.

A new season of broadcasts from the Lyric Opera of Chicago kicks off on Saturday with Giuseppe Verdi's OTELLO. Get set for eight opera broadcasts on WRTI!

Jealousy, betrayal, and murder—Shakespeare's drama finds new dimension in Verdi's blazing and revealingly expressive music. Otello seems unbeatable on the battlefield, but he's powerless against his insidious henchman Iago, who convinces him that his innocent wife has been untrue. Saturday, May 17, 1 to 4 pm on WRTI.

Originally published on Fri May 16, 2014 8:00 pm

The Stradivarius violin gets its name from master craftsman Antonio Stradivari. When he died in 1737, his secrets died with him: No one has ever been able to duplicate the sound of the violins or violas he made.

His instruments have taken on a mythical quality. Today they fetch millions of dollars at auctions; Sotheby's will soon auction off a viola that it expects to sell for $45 million.

Anonymous 4: Breaking Up Is Hard To Do (But They're Doing It)

The vocal ensemble Anonymous 4 will disband after the 2015-16 concert season.
Dario Acosta

Originally published on Wed May 14, 2014 12:01 pm

In 1986, four women gathered in a casual setting to sing through a bit of medieval chant. Little did they know they were launching Anonymous 4, an a cappella ensemble that has spanned nearly 30 years, 20 albums, countless concerts and more than a millenium of music.

Today the group announced that the 2015-16 season will be its last together. But this isn't the first time Anonymous 4 has thought about calling it quits. The group bid a similar farewell in 2004.

Graduation and Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance"- What's the Connection?

The Philadelphians and Yannick in Asia: Not Your Typical Tour

Beijing's National Centre for the Performing Arts is on the itinerary for The Philadelphia Orchestra's 2014 Asia Tour, as well as some very unusual venues.

The Philadelphia Orchestra is going deeper into China than ever before, into the Hunan province where modern arts centers have only existed for a few years, and out of Macao's air-conditioned casinos for outdoor performing amid the ruins of a cathedral. The Philadelphia Inquirer's David Patrick Stearns will be there every step of the way.
