Soprano Patricia Racette sings Cio Cio San and tenor Stefano Secco sings Pinkerton in Puccini's MADAMA BUTTERFLY.

Family, fortune, and honor—the geisha Cio-Cio-San forsakes them all for the callous American naval officer who calls her his "bride." But what she sees as a lifetime commitment, he treats as just a fleeting pleasure.

Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly features some of opera's most famous music, including Cio-Cio-San's heartbreaking "Un bel di" and the beautiful "Humming Chorus." It's Puccini's heartbreaking tragedy on WRTI. Saturday, May 24, 1 to 4 pm.

A new season of broadcasts from the Lyric Opera of Chicago kicks off on Saturday with Giuseppe Verdi's OTELLO. Get set for eight opera broadcasts on WRTI!

Jealousy, betrayal, and murder—Shakespeare's drama finds new dimension in Verdi's blazing and revealingly expressive music. Otello seems unbeatable on the battlefield, but he's powerless against his insidious henchman Iago, who convinces him that his innocent wife has been untrue. Saturday, May 17, 1 to 4 pm on WRTI.

Is A Stradivarius Just A Violin?

The Stradivarius violin gets its name from master craftsman Antonio Stradivari. When he died in 1737, his secrets died with him: No one has ever been able to duplicate the sound of the violins or violas he made.

His instruments have taken on a mythical quality. Today they fetch millions of dollars at auctions; Sotheby's will soon auction off a viola that it expects to sell for $45 million.

A New Principal Guest Conductor for The Philadelphia Orchestra

As Principal Guest Conductor, Stephane Deneve will be part of the creative planning process, and lead several subscription weeks, family programs, and summer concerts in Vail and Saratoga.

The Philadelphia Orchestra has named a Principal Guest Conductor for a three-year term beginning this fall. WRTI’s Susan Lewis has more on the appointment of the internationally known conductor Stephane Deneve, who has been a frequent guest since making his debut with the Orchestra in 2007.

Conductor Laureate Ignat Solzhenitsyn leads The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia in two works on this month's Applause! broadcast. Benjamin Britten's tribute to his teacher, the Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, will open the program. The work, written in 1937, brought Britten international attention. Also on the program, Franz Joseph Haydn's "Surprise Symphony." Dave Conant hosts. Sunday, May 18th, 5 to 6 pm on WRTI.

Anonymous 4: Breaking Up Is Hard To Do (But They're Doing It)

The vocal ensemble Anonymous 4 will disband after the 2015-16 concert season.

In 1986, four women gathered in a casual setting to sing through a bit of medieval chant. Little did they know they were launching Anonymous 4, an a cappella ensemble that has spanned nearly 30 years, 20 albums, countless concerts and more than a millenium of music.

Today the group announced that the 2015-16 season will be its last together. But this isn't the first time Anonymous 4 has thought about calling it quits. The group bid a similar farewell in 2004.

The Philadelphians and Yannick in Asia: Not Your Typical Tour

Beijing's National Centre for the Performing Arts is on the itinerary for The Philadelphia Orchestra's 2014 Asia Tour, as well as some very unusual venues.

The Philadelphia Orchestra is going deeper into China than ever before, into the Hunan province where modern arts centers have only existed for a few years, and out of Macao's air-conditioned casinos for outdoor performing amid the ruins of a cathedral.
