The VERY Glorious Sound of Christmas: The Philadelphia Orchestra In Concert on WRTI, Dec. 15, 1 pm

Mendelssohn Club Artistic Director Alan Harler speaks with WRTI's Susan Lewis about the appeal of the holiday music performed in the Glorious Sound of Christmas concerts.

The Philadelphia Orchestra lends its lush sound to familiar and timeless holiday classics and carols on this Sunday's archival Philadelphia Orchestra In Concert broadcast from 2004. The Glorious Sound of Christmas, named for the Orchestra’s best-selling Christmas album, is an annual Philadelphia Orchestra tradition and the perfect way to begin your holiday celebrations.

Conductor Rossen Milanov is joined by Philadelphia's Singing City Choir and Princeton's American Boychoir, performing selections from the beloved LP featuring Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra - from Schubert's Ave Maria, to selections from The Nutcracker, to Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride. Christmas never sounded better!

At intermission, listen to Mendelssohn Club Artistic Director Alan Harler speak with WRTI's Susan Lewis about this year's upcoming Philadelphia Orchestra Glorious Sound of Christmas concerts on December 19, 20, and 21. Longtime Orchestra violinist Davyd Booth reflects on the experience of performing in the 2004 concert, and many others since then, with WRTI's Jim Cotter. Gregg Whiteside is host and producer.
