Thomas Hampson's Song of America Series: Song of Walt Whitman on ENCORE!

WRTI is proud to present Song of America, a new radio series that reveals American classic song - poetry set to music by American composers - as a vibrant diary of the American experience.

On Sunday, July 22 at 5 pm, tune in for Song of Walt Whitman. Whitman, the "Bard of Democracy," was the founder of a new American language. With music built deep into his poetry, it's no surprise that Whitman has been a beacon for American composers. You'll hear performances by Thomas Hampson, William Sharpe, Susan Graham, and Ramon Vargas.

Each program focuses on a particular topic that sheds light on a larger theme in American history, and includes songs drawn from archival and modern recordings, plus stories and insights from Hampson about the people and events that inspired those songs. Several programs also feature interviews with experts from related fields.

The series will air on selected Sundays at 5 pm - be sure to check the WRTI website for schedule updates. Baritone Thomas Hampson, who conceived and developed the series, is host.
