From Russian Romance To Revolution
Wednesday, July 31, 8 pm
Kiril Karabits, conductor
Di Wu, piano

RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: Russian Easter Overture
RACHMANINOFF: Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini
STRAVINSKY: The Rite of Spring (100th anniversary of the premiere of this masterpiece)

Three Russian titans, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov have created some of the most popular orchestral music of all time. We celebrate the brilliance of master orchestral wizard Rimsky-Korsakov’s iconic Russian Easter Overture, the lush nostalgic romanticism of Rachmaninoff in his Paganini Rhapsody and the savage power of Stravinsky in his earth-shattering Rite of Spring, celebrating the 100th anniversary of its premiere this year. The dynamic young Ukrainian conductor Kiril Karabits makes his Mann Center debut in this concert. Details and ticket info here.

Van Cliburn: A Tribute
Thursday, August 1, 8 pm
Cristian Macelaru, conductor
Vadym Kholodenko, pianist

WAGNER: Prelude to Die Meistersinger, Act One
Concerto with Cliburn Competition winner Vadym Kholodenko
LISZT: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2
STRAUSS: Suite from Der Rosenkavalier
The late American pianist Van Cliburn had a long and cherished relationship with Philadelphia audiences and our great orchestra. We pay tribute to his memory and his musical legacy by presenting the very first orchestra engagement by the Grand Prize winner of the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, an event close to Mr. Cliburn’s heart. You’ll be among the first to applaud this new talent after the announcement of the winners in June. Thrill to one of the great Romantic piano concertos and orchestral music beloved by Mr. Cliburn as Cristian Macelaru leads the Philadelphia Orchestra in this special concert.
