A Special Archival Philadelphia Orchestra Broadcast On WRTI: Tribute To Wolfgang Sawallisch, June 9

As the Philadelphia Orchestra continues its residency in China, we listen back this Sunday to one of Wolfgang Sawallisch's last performances with the Orchestra from late April, 2003.

On this week’s Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast, it's two composers and two works the late Maestro loved - Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, "Pastoral" -  and this one was a memorable concert, indeed, given only days before Sawallisch’s farewell speech to the Orchestra – a speech that we’ll hear, in its entirety, for the first time on radio or TV.

At intermission, WRTI’s Jim Cotter will speak with then-Philadelphia Orchestra Executive Director Joe Kluger about the late Maestro.

A broadcast not to be missed!  Gregg Whiteside is your host for a very special Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast, this Sunday at 2 pm.

Gregg was the host of WRTI's morning drive show from 2012 until his retirement from WRTI in January, 2021. He began producing and hosting The Philadelphia Orchestra In Concert broadcasts in 2013, joining the Orchestra in Hong Kong for the first-ever live international radio broadcasts from that island in 2016, and in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem for two historic broadcasts in 2018. You can still hear Gregg as host of the Orchestra broadcasts every Sunday and Monday on WRTI.
