Soprano Barbara Hannigan's Philadelphia Orchestra Debut On WRTI: June 23rd, 2 PM

Simon Rattle will be back on the podium this Sunday at 2 pm for a Philadelphia Orchestra performance from late May of Beethoven’s "Pastoral" Symphony, with its vivid scenes of gathering thunderstorms, wandering brooks, and breezy countrysides. We’ll also hear Webern's Passacaglia, and Three fragments from Alban Berg's shattering opera Wozzeck, both of which received their U.S. premieres in Philadelphia as part of Leopold Stokowski's vision for 20th-century music.

The brilliant soprano Barbara Hannigan, in her Philadelphia Orchestra debut, will perform the roles of both Marie and her child in the Berg work, and the extremely demanding scenes from Ligeti's thrilling opera, Le Grande Macabre, in character as the Chief of the Secret Political Police - coloratura role as hilarious and frenetic as the Wozzeck fragments are horrifying. A program not to be missed! Gregg Whiteside is host. Sunday, June 23rd, from 2 to 4 pm. Join us!
