The Philadelphia Orchestra, Joshua Bell, and Yannick, from 2012 on WRTI 90.1: Feb. 11th at 1 PM

Violinist Joshua Bell

Sunday’s Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast takes us back to October of 2012, and a live broadcast on WRTI from the first year of our concert broadcasts.

The Orchestra’s then-new Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin was joined by violinist Joshua Bell for a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade, inspired by the great Greek philosophers and their testimonies on love and romance.

Also on the program, one of the highlights of the 2012-13 season, a celebratory work by the Oakland-based composer Gabriela Lena Frank—commissioned for the inaugural concerts of the Philadelphia Orchestra's new music director. Ms. Frank’s music reflects her diverse Peruvian, Chinese, and Lithuanian heritage, and her Concertino Cusqueño, written to celebrate the players of the Philadelphia Orchestra on the eve of Yannick’s first season, finds inspiration in two unlikely bedfellows: Peruvian Andean culture and British composer Benjamin Britten, whose music Frank greatly admires.

Following intermission, it’s the Symphony No. 4 by Brahms, full of expressive melodies and rich harmonies, and long a favorite of Philadelphia audiences.

During intermission, we’ll revisit an intermission interview that Jim Cotter conducted with Yannick, at the time of the concert, five years ago.

That’s Sunday, February 4th from 1 to 3 pm on WRTI 90.1, the WRTI Mobile App, and streaming worldwide at wrti.org.
