You're in for a big treat today! We're designating a whole day of programming to our own Philadelphians - from 6 am to 6 pm. Throughout the day during classical hours, you'll hear Philadelphia Orchestra recordings under Music Directors Leopold Stokowski, Eugene Ormandy, Riccardo Muti, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Christoph Eschenbach, and Yannick Nezet-Seguin.
From the Orchestra's first recording (with Stokowski and the Orchestra boarding the ferry to Camden, recording the Brahms Hungarian Dance No. 5 at Victor Talking Machine Co.), to the most recent with Yannick Nezet-Seguin conducting (Stokowski transcriptions, and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring) we’ll sample the vast recorded legacy of The Philadelphia Orchestra.
Highlights include:
Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Haydn, with Wolfgang Sawallisch conducting; Hindemith: Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Weber, with Eugene Ormandy conducting; Richard Strauss: Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, with Eugene Ormandy; Richard Wagner: Love Music from Acts II and III from Tristan and Isolde, arranged and conducted by Leopold Stokowski; Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet highlights, conducted by Riccardo Muti; Poulenc: Organ Concerto, with Olivier Latry, organ and Christoph Eschenbach conducting; J. S. Bach: Passacaglia and Fugue, arranged by Stokowski, and conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin

In 1925, the Philadelphians were the first symphonic orchestra to make electrical recordings. And 90 years later, they've amassed a vast recorded legacy. Today, and every Sunday at 1 pm, WRTI shares this legacy with you.
