The Philadelphians in Concert on WRTI: Gil Shaham Plays Berg, Nov. 8, 1 PM

Listen to Gil Shaham perform Berg's Violin Concerto with The Philadelphians on WRTI, Sunday, April 26 at 1 pm.

Four compositions, notable for their unusually imaginative explorations of distinctive sound worlds, are all featured on WRTI's Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert re-broadcast this Sunday, November 8th at 1 pm.

On the podium is guest conductor Robin Ticciati, principal conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, who directs the radiant opening to Wagner's opera Lohengrin, the Prelude to Act I, depicting the gradual unveiling of the Holy Grail, attended by a host of angels.

The program, from last February at Verizon Hall, continues with Alban Berg’s last completed composition, his magnificent Violin Concerto, combining lush Romantic scoring with 12-tone musical techniques pioneered by his teacher Arnold Schoenberg, played by one of the world’s preeminent violinists, Gil Shaham, who speaks at intermission with WRTI's Susan Lewis.

Another work made up almost entirely of shifting sounds - Gyorgy Ligeti’s Atmosphères, best known for its incorporation into Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, comes alive when heard played the Philadelphians. The only other Philadelphia Orchestra performances of the work were back in 1965 - so this should be a special treat!

And, finally, Claude Debussy’s Impressionist masterpiece La Mer, which is his portrait of the sea, one of the 20th century's great masterpieces, concludes the program.

That's Sunday, November 8 from 1 to 3 pm. Gregg Whiteside is producer and host.
