The Philadelphia Orchestra In Concert on WRTI: Music from Russian Dance! September 7, 1 PM

French conductor Stephane Deneve

Guest conductor Stephane Deneve leads the Philadelphians in a program from last March at Verizon Hall, dedicated to Russian dance music.

Igor Stravinsky set the tale of a magical Firebird, based on a mythical Russian legend, as his first major success with the Ballets Russes in Paris. And Sergei Prokofiev's take on the Cinderella fairytale, complete with elegant waltzes and midnight chimes, was premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. Both works, performed in concert version only, are incredible orchestral showpieces in their own right, especially when played by the Fabulous Philadelphians!

Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oaks, written for a smaller ensemble, marks a sharp contrast from his early ballet scores; we'll hear this work on Sunday's broadcast, also. Written in a neo-classical style, it has inspired dance interpretations as well, most famously by Jerome Robbins.

That's this Sunday, September 7, from 1 to 3 pm. Don't miss this re-broadcast.

Gregg Whiteside is producer and host.

PROGRAM:

Stravinsky: Dumbarton Oaks Concerto in E-Flat, for Chamber Orchestra

Prokofiev: Excerpts from Cinderella

Stravinsky: Suite from The Firebird (1919 version)
