The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert on WRTI: Macelaru Conducts Beethoven and Falla, May 24, 1 PM

Pianist Jorge Federico Osorio makes his Philadelphia Orchestra debut in this concert broadcast.

One of the highlights of the 2014-15 Philadelphia Orchestra concert season was the pairing of works by Beethoven and Manuel de Falla, originally scheduled for the late Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, to whom the concert was dedicated.

Maestro Frühbeckpassed away at the age of 80 on June 11, 2014, and he was not only a great friend of The Philadelphia Orchestra, but a musician of exemplary standards. He made his U.S. debut with the Orchestra on Valentine’s Day in 1969 and became a regular presence on the ensemble’s podium, often for multi-week residencies.

On Sunday, May 24th at 1 pm our Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast brings you this special performance as it happened in March of this year.

Taking the baton is Philadelphia Orchestra Conductor-in-Residence Cristian Macelaru, who will conduct Beethoven’s Symphony No 6, the “Pastoral,” to begin the concert. And, following intermission, the great Spanish composer Manuel de Falla takes us to a different landscape with his Nights in the Gardens of Spain, a nocturne for piano and orchestra, played by the vibrant and passionate pianist Jorge Federico Osorio, who makes his Philadelphia Orchestra debut.

Concluding the program is Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat, Suite No. 2, which makes an enchanting use of traditional Andalusian folk music.

During intermission, WRTI’s Susan Lewis and Kile Smith will speak backstage with Cristian Macelaru and Jorge Federico Osorio.
