Tune in on Sunday at 1 pm on WRTI 90.1, and Monday at 7 pm on WRTI HD-2, as our Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert broadcast brings us a single, remarkable work, especially relevant for our troubled times—Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem.
In this great choral and symphonic masterpiece, Britten ponders the horrors of war, and combines text from the Latin Mass for the Dead with poetry by Wilfred Owen, who died in battle just days before the end of the First World War.
Philadelphia Orchestra Conductor Laureate Charles Dutoit will be on the podium to conduct Russian soprano Tatiana Pavlovskaya, Australian tenor Steve Davislim, German baritone Matthias Goerne, and the combined forces of the Westminster Symphonic Choir, and The American Boychoir.
Britten said his aim was to have each of the three soloists represent “the three nations that had suffered most during the war”—England, Germany, and Russia—and this performance honors that tradition with singers from Australia, Germany, and Russia.
There will be no intermission.
