A potent and controversial voice for America and what it stands for, Woody Guthrie sang his songs from sea to shining sea. The power of his messages touched the hearts of many Americans, and even led the U. S. government to call upon him to inspire and encourage the debilitated and exhausted construction workers of the great Hoover Dam with his songs.
On this, the 100th anniversary of Woody's birth, the folk duo Mike + Ruthy were approached by Woody's daughter Nora to finish and record a song from the Guthrie archive. "My New York City" is part of a 4-CD collection of Woody’s New York songs entitled “My Name is New York” released in June by Woody Guthrie Publications. Other contributors to the compilation include Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and Pete Seeger.
