The best musician wins the prize, including marriage to the beautiful Eva. Stolzing has already fallen in love with her—and she with him—but he must first learn the arcane rules of the guild of Meistersingers before he can hope to win her hand. Stolzing has help from the revered Hans Sachs but an enemy in Beckmesser, and time is running out.
Wagner kept magic and myth out of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, his only comedy, but filled this opera with some of the most exhilarating music he ever wrote. Note the early 12:30 start, because you won't want to miss the stirring Prelude! A strong cast headed by James Morris as Sachs brings this epic, perennial favorite of Wagner to life.
Saturday, June 22nd, 12:30 to 6 pm (note early start time).
