Looking Back at 50 Years of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia

Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia Music Director Dirk Brosse

This past season, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphiacelebrated its 50th anniversary. Started as the Concerto Soloists in 1964, by then-Music Director Marc Mostovoy as a way for audiences to hear Baroque and Classical chamber works, and to provide performance opportunities for young professional musicians emerging from the Curtis Institute of Music and other regional training programs, the ensemble's reputation has only grown stronger over the years.

This week on Crossover, we celebrate the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia's 50th with a special program highlighting the ensemble and its music directors over the years.

Ignat Solzhenitsyn is now conductor laureate of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia.

Jill speaks with current Chamber Orchestra President Susan Schwartz-McDonald about the organization and its evolution, and with each of the three music directors that has led the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia over the years - Marc Mostovoy (1964 through 2004), Ignat Solzhenitsyn (2004 through 2010) and Dirk Brosse (2010 through present). You'll also hear the orchestra's music, as led by each of the three maestros.

Join us for this look into the past, present, and future of one of this region's pre-eminent cultural organizations on Saturday at 11:30 am on WRTI-FM, with an encore on Friday at 7 pm WRTI-HD2. Both airings are available on the All-Classical web stream at wrti.org.

And, don't forget! You can hear the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia in performance on WRTI on the third Sunday of each month (including next Sunday, May 17th) at 5 pm.

It's his parents' fault. For Joe's sixth birthday, they gave him a transistor radio. All of a sudden, their dreams of having a doctor or lawyer (or even a fry cook) in the family went down the tubes.
