Jazz Album of the Week: Vocalist Cyrille Aimée Captured One Summer Night at NYC's (Le) Poisson Rouge

June 25, 2018. French-born vocalist Cyrille Aimée’s new album Live is a testament to why she’s made such a big splash in the American jazz scene. Cyrille Amiée Live marks the bandleader's last time performing with her longtime band, and there was something special in the air that night.

Cyrille debuted her first major label recording as a leader (It’s A Good Day) in 2014 after many guest appearances with big names, including trumpeter Roy Hargrove, saxophonist Joel Frahm and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra.

Cyrille’s newest album, Live, was recorded last August in New York at (Le) Poisson Rouge, and there are plenty of favorites from her two studio albums.

The quartet configuration in her band has been unique because she has regularly featured two guitarists (Adrien Moignard and Michael Valeanu) to complement her gypsy jazz background.

Known for her sharp improvisational skills, Cyrille breathes new life into Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin” and “Off the Wall.” Yes— Michael Jackson tunes backed by gypsy guitar!

Her original “Nuit Blanche” screams French cabaret, and her live arrangement of “It’s A Good Day” reminds us why our love affair with Cyrille started back in 2014 (2012 for the aficionados).

This group has done these songs hundreds of times, and their farewell show made the pieces sound as fresh as they did originally. It’s a group celebrating a last hurrah, and these folks know how to go out with a bang.

Personnel:

  • Cyrille Aimee – Vocals
  • Adrien Moignard – Guitar
  • Michael Valeanu – Guitar
