This Sunday, December 18th at 3 pm on WRTI, Symphony in C joins with the Greater South Jersey Chorus in a performance of George Frederick Handel’s Messiah. Recorded live December 10th, this concert brings to life the well-loved 274-year-old masterpiece, called “truly immortal” by Symphony in C’s music director, Stilian Kirov.
Handel composed the original score, 259 pages long, in just 24 days. Although the premiere of Messiah was just after Easter and the second performance was in June, its libretto covers a wide range of biblical texts and is naturally associated with Christmas as well.
Whenever Messiah is performed, it is one of the most popular pieces of Western music. Our WRTI broadcast is a great way to enter into the holiday season!
Symphony in C, New Jersey’s young professional orchestra, performs at Rutgers–Camden Center for the Arts. The Greater South Jersey Chorus, now in its 25th year, is directed by Christopher B. Thomas, who also directs choral activities at Rowan University.
