Legendary jazz and R&B producer Joel Dorn passed away on December 17, 2007.
My friend, Joel Dorn, of some 37 years passed away today [December 17, 2007]. We bonded a friendship initially by phone, and corresponded that way for almost 40 years before finally meeting face-to-face. But all the while he'd send me LP's and CD's he either singularly produced or helped produce.
As an independent record producer, he danced to his own tunes as much as possible. He was a survivor in a tough business--and was well-known and respected for his rebellious stands, as well as his off-beat--but clever sense of humor.
He was an alumnus of Temple University, former DJ, record producer extraordinaire, and was an octagon of a man. He had many sides, and his creative mind was always in motion.
The thing I remember and appreciate most about him, was his honesty. If you were looking for a sugar-coated answer to a question that cried out for an honest response, and asked Joel his opinion--he'd disappoint you every time.
Joel Dorn was one of a kind...and I mean that in the most complimentary sense. It's going to take some time for me to get used to this one.
