Blowing Her Own Horn: Norway's First Lady Of The Trumpet

When you think female trumpeters, Alison Balsom usually comes to mind first. But there's another lady that's about to give Ms. Balsom a run for her money. Enter Norwegian-born Tine Thing Helseth. In urgent demand as a fast-rising soloist, the 26-year-old trumpeter, whose first name is pronounced "tina ting," has already performed with  the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and the list goes on...

In 2011, the same year she signed a contract with EMI Classics, Helseth was named a "Superstar of Tomorrow" by BBC Music Magazine. She was tapped to open the memorial concert for the 2011 Norway attacks by playing trumpet from the roof of Oslo City Hall in 2012. In 2013, she made her BBC Proms debut in the London premiere of Matthias Pintscher’s Chute d’étoiles (Falling Stars) with the BBC Scottish Symphony led by Mr. Pintscher.

Jill speaks with Tine Thing Helseth, and plays works from her two latest CDs: 2011's Storyteller, and 2013's Tine.
