Academy of Vocal Arts on WRTI: Gounod's FAUST, May 3rd at 3 PM

Mexican tenor Diego Silva sings the title role

Join us for another broadcast in our series of operas from the Academy of Vocal Arts.  AVA Opera Theater is currently presenting Charles Gounod’s Faust, in a series of performances throughout the Delaware Valley. Additional performances are scheduled for Centennial Hall at the Haverford School, Haverford on May 5th, and Central Bucks East High School, Doylestown on May 9th. Listen on WRTI this Sunday, May 3, from 3 to 6 pm.

Faust is undoubtedly Gounod’s best-known opera, and tells the classic tale of sin and redemption. The opera opens with the aging Dr. Faust in despair and near suicide, his passions reawakened by the sound of young men and women outside his window.  He curses God and summons Satan. The Devil, Méphistophélès, appears and producing the beguiling vision of a young village girl, Marguerite, convinces Faust to exchange his soul for the chance to revisit youth and desire.

Christofer Macatsoris conducts the AVA Opera Orchestra and the cast includes a number of honorees from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, as well as award-winners from the Gerda Lissner Foundation, George London Foundation, and judges’ selections from AVA’s Giargiari Competition.
