Jazz At Jacobs: A Live Jazz Piano Extravaganza On June 21

Right around the corner from Rittenhouse Square, Jacobs Music Company is hosting a free, eight-hour marathon of live, jazz piano music on Friday, June 21st, from 11 am to 7 pm. The Philadelphia Jazz Project has lined up ten master pianists from our area who will perform throughout the day at the Jacobs Music store at 1718 Chestnut Street. WRTI is proud to be a media sponsor for JAZZ AT JACOBS - one of many programs taking place on Make Music Philly Day. Don't miss it!

Big Band Jazz and The Jones Boys, Sunday Night

This Sunday evening at 7 pm, Big Band Jazz presents The Jones Boys. That's Jones as in Quincy, Thad, Hank, and Elvin.

All-everything composer, arranger, and winner of just about every award Quincy Jones led bands in the 50's and 60's. Although some know him mainly as a record producer of stars new and not so new, it's always good to hear a taste of his jazz band chops.

The Philadelphia Orchestra: Sibelius's Last Two Symphonies Without Interruption, Lang Lang, Rattle

This Sunday from 2 to 4 pm, The Philadelphia Orchestra renews its historic connection with the great Finnish master Jean Sibelius (Stokowski led the U.S. premieres of his last three symphonies) as Simon Rattle will conduct the final two symphonies, Nos. 6 and 7, together without interruption, from a May, 2013 concert.

Lyric Opera of Chicago On WRTI: ELEKTRA And HANSEL & GRETEL, June 8th

This week it's a double bill from the Lyric Opera of Chicago starting with a performance of Elektra by Richard Strauss. Sir Andrew Davis conducts. Next, it's Hansel & Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck, with a German libretto written by Adelheid Wette, Humperdinck's sister, based on the Grimm brothers' fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. Ward Stare conducts. Both operas are sung in German. Saturday, June 8th, 1 to 5 pm.
