Music Director Dirk Brosse will conduct the ensemble in the world premiere of Jonathan Leshnoff's Cello Concerto, featuring renowned Russian cellist Nina Kotova. I came to Philadelphia in the autumn of 1964 and soon found WFLN. The classical music format reminded me of WQXR, the station I had enjoyed in North Jersey growing up. But at 12:30 pm weekdays they broadcast a really interesting interview program hosted by this sophisticated, well-spoken and often humorous host named Ralph Collier. Seven years later after college, and a brief career as a high school teacher, I found myself with a job at that station where I met that same broadcaster.

Welcome to 2013. Besides being the year of the snake and the UN's International Year of Water Cooperation (who knew!), it bears mentioning that WRTI turns 60! On July 9, 1953, WRTI became a licensed FM radio station operating at 10 watts from Temple University's main campus in Philadelphia. Thanks to you, over the years we've grown into the largest classical music and jazz media outlet in the tri-state area.

Leroy Anderson has just the right touch with The Typewriter composed in 1950. It's one of many short, light orchestral works that the prolific composer wrote between 1946 and 1970. Many were performed by the Boston Pops under the direction of Arthur Fiedler.

Windsor Johnston Moves On

WRTI’s longtime morning anchor and News Director Windsor Johnston tendered her resignation earlier this month. Windsor’s affiliation with the station began while she was a student at Temple University. She covered many local, national, and international stories while at WRTI, including the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia. She was also one of the few reporters on the scene of the violence that followed the presidential election in Kenya in December, 2007, and filed reports for both WRTI and NPR.
